Pitt Drops First Two Scrimmages, Stays Optimistic for the Year

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Feb. 14, 2011

The University of Pittsburgh Lacrosse team travelled to Latrobe, PA for a double header against NCAA Division III St. Vincent’s College, and NCAA Division II Seton Hill University.

The season opener was played on a bitterly cold day that started with wind chills around 20 Degrees, snow flurries, and on a recently plowed field with one to two foot snow banks on each side.  This was Pitt's first experience playing outdoors and away from the Cost center this spring, as well as their first chance to play in a live action game.

Pitt fought the elements but came up short as the team lost 3-8 to St. Vincent’s, and 6-11 to Seton Hill.  Granted they were pre-season games, but the team was able to learn a lot about who they are, where they stand, and what needs to be worked on leading into the MCLA Season.  All players on the Pittsburgh 41 man roster were able to see playing time as well in both of these games.

Captain Matt Pham's commented on the game "It was really good for us to get to play against NCAA teams to see where we stand for the season. Although we didn't come out with the wins, I saw some quarters where we really played well. (Goalie and Captain Chris) Gorham played great in the cage and once we settle down on our clears we should really be able to compete with all the teams on our schedule. The weather definitely had an impact on our stick work, but overall, I'm very happy with how our team is entering the season."

Next up for the Panthers on Friday February 18th is near-by rival Grove City College.  Pitt has never beaten Grove City in a regular season meeting, but travelled to and beat the Wolverines in a meeting this past fall.  A preview of this game can be found at: http://mcla.us/scores/games/9568/

Also schedule for this weekend are two more pre-season games with NCLL teams Youngstown State and Robert Morris.  When asked for comment on the upcoming weekend, head coach Sean Buzzard quoted the King of the Ring Clubber Lang with "My Prediction (for this weekend)...PAIN"
