Pitt Lacrosse Alum, John Algie, named President and GM of the new MLL FranchiseApr. 12, 2011
BOSTON, Mass. (April 12, 2011) - The new Columbus, Ohio-based Major League Lacrosse (MLL) team will benamed the Ohio Machine, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Former MLL executive John Algie will serve as President and General Manager for the Machine, which will begin play in the 2012 season along with a yet-to-be-named team in Charlotte, North Carolina. “We are thrilled to announce John as the President and General Manager of our new Columbus team,” said Commissioner Gross. “He has played an integral role in the League’s development throughout his years with the organization and we are confident that he will be successful in the launch of the Ohio Machine.” This will not be MLL’s first venture into Columbus. Columbus has already played host to the very first MLL Summer Showcase game in 2000, the 2002 MLL Championship Game, and a 2010 regular-season match-up between the Long Island Lizards and the now-disbanded Chicago Machine. Algie believes the sizeable lacrosse community makes Ohio’s capital city a desirable home for the new professional lacrosse team. The team’s name was chosen to represent the state’s passion and indomitable spirit. “The name ‘Ohio Machine’ evokes both the rich history and the bright future of the state,” said Algie. “From mining, to manufacturing, to the founding of dozens of famous, industry-leading national and international brands, the ‘Ohio Machine’ has been, and continues to be, one of the primary drivers for the development of the United States as a world leader. Ohioans are known for their tenacity, and soon, our lacrosse team will be known for that too.” Algie spent three years as MLL’s Director of League Operations where he oversaw implementation and enforcement of the League’s on-field and player personnel rules, college and pro player scouting, and game operations management. Before joining the Machine, Algie was an attorney for the international law firm of Jones Day where he focused on corporate transactional work including mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions. Algie played college lacrosse for the University of Pittsburgh while earning his BS in Finance. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and also earned his Master of Business Administration from the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business.
