Panthers Hang on For The "W" Against OhioFeb. 26, 2012 Pittsburgh, PA - This past saturday, Feb. 25th, the Pittsburgh Men’s Lacrosse team overcame blustery conditions and a persistent Ohio U offense to arrive at a 12-11 victory. Although the Panthers never fell behind, the Bobcats managed to keep the score close, and were within a couple goals for the duration of the game. Novotny led all scorers with 6 points, followed by Powell and Grmusa who scored five and two, respectively. Drew Miller led the defense from inside the crease with 14 saves to keep the Panthers ahead. The Panthers struggled defensively, partly due to the loss of LSM Sam Marousek. The freshman long pole snapped a collarbone, but is expected to make a full recovery in 6-8 weeks. The victory was especially sweet for Pitt midfielder Mike Mannion, who matched up against younger brother and Ohio attackman, Connor. “Theres nothing like a little sibling rivalry to raise the stakes a little bit,” commented the older sibling. “Max and the rest of the defense did a great job D-ing him up, and I’m going to let Connor know about that at the dinner table,” admitted Mannion jokingly. The Panthers now move to 2-0 in the season, with the same record in CCLA division play. “It’s nice to win a couple games in the beginning, but we haven’t proved anything yet,” commented frosh midfielder Matt Wolfe (1G, 2A), “ We still have the hardest part of our season coming up. We have to stay focused.” Indeed the Panthers hope to stay focused— and bring the same intensity as they have displayed thus far— to the green grass and warm weather of Athens, GA this weekend. Pitt lacrosse will embark on Thursday evening for a long ride south to face Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. These three games will conclude the Panther’s 2012 Spring Break road trip. Hail to Pitt!
