Pitt Upsets No. 10 BuffaloMar. 25, 2012 Pittsburgh, PA — No. 22 Pittsburgh jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 12:45 left in the first quarter and wouldn’t look back in downing No. 10 ranked SUNY-Buffalo on Friday, March 23 at the Cost Center. With the victory, the Panthers improved to 6-0 on the season (4-0 in the CCLA). Junior Tyler Novotny spearheaded the attack with 7 points, including 6 goals and one assist. “We came into this game pretty confident and fired up. At the end of the day, it just came down to execution of the game plan,” articulated senior Nick Ruff (1G). “Also it doesn’t hurt that Gorham had a heck of a day between the pipes,” added Ruff. The Panthers jumped out to a quick lead and finished the first quarter on top, 3-2. Nick Ruff, Alex Powell, and Matt Wolfe were responsible for the three Panther scores. The second quarter started with two fantastic saves from Chris Gorham, followed by two goals from Novotny. Alex Hultgren scored for Buffalo, bringing the score to 5-3 at the half. The third quarter was filled with scoring and high intensity lacrosse. Novotny exploded for four more goals while Wolfe and Powell each buried one. Pitt was up 8-4, but Buffalo countered with some offense of their own. Pitt was up 11-9 entering the fourth quarter. Both teams scored once more in the fourth quarter, ending the contest 12-10, Pittsburgh. This was the second time this season that a Pitt player competed against a sibling on the field. Sophomore attackman Alex Powell outshone older brother and Buffalo attackman Brian Powell in the Pitt victory. Although he was clearly dismayed at the loss, Brian admitted he was proud of his younger brother for helping lead the Panthers to victory. Hail to PITT!
