Pitt Overcomes Rain, Bomb Threats in 12-10 Victory

Pittsburgh, PA -- The Pitt Panthers emerged victorious over the West Virginia Mountaineers 12-10 on Wednesday, April 11^th. WVU put together a 9-2 run in the second half to knot the score at 10 before losing steam in the fourth quarter.

With emerging sunshine and a cold wind on their backs, the Panther offense jumped out to a familiar 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Tyler Novotny’s first quarter hat trick was supplemented by goals from Mike Mannion and Colin Peck to put Pitt on top, 5-0.

Fortune briefly smiled upon the Mountaineers early in the second quarter when a crease scrum ended in a WVU goal. Senior Brian Faber responded with a goal and then fed Nick Ruff, who finished it with a top shelf screamer to bring the score to 7-1. It is rumored that RS Senior Chris Roy, who stayed in Pittsburgh, felt a great disturbance in the force when rubber hit nylon this time. Novotny added another goal for good measure—his fourth of the day—and the teams broke for halftime, the score 8-1 Pitt.

WVU scored first in the second half after capitalizing on a botched Pitt clear attempt. Tyler Novotny answered with a goal assisted by Colin Peck. The Panthers as a whole, however, seemed to have no answer for the ensuing West Virginia run. Except for another goal from Novo, the Mountaineers kept Pitt scoreless and inched the score to 10-10. During this run, Pitt served a 3 minute and 1 minute man-down penalty.

Thanks to positive reinforcement from the WVU faithful, the Panthers managed to scrape together goals from both Novotny and Grmusa to finish the game 12-10.
