Chapman Bests UCSB In Exhibition OpenerJan. 27, 2014 Carpinteria, CA - UCSB opened up a short pre-season with NCAA DIII Chapman University at the Santa Barbara Polo Club on Saturday. The game was an exhibition at the Oceana LAX Festival run by BitterLax. There were some bright spots for the Gauchos, including taking a 2-0 lead early, but over the course of the game Chapman won the draw control battle, the ground ball battle and outscored UCSB 10-4 in the first half before going on to win the game 17-8. Chapman outshot UCSB 33-19. There was a lot of firepower in the hands of the Panthers and all the extra possessions fueled a quick striking offense. The Panthers used a nice mix of up-tempo transition and settled offense to create their opportunities but even when they settled it they did not wait very long before attacking. Nine Chapman players got in on the scoring. Leading the way for the Panthers was crease attacker Gretchen Rodenberger (San Jose, CA) with 6 goals and 1 assist. UCSB leading scorer was Lori Marchildon (Haddonfield, NJ) with 2 goals an 1 assist. Seven different Gauchos did contribute at least a goal or an assist but there was nobody matching the output of Rodenberger. Chapman goalies combined for 9 saves against 17 shots placed on goal by the Gauchos. UCSB goalie Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) had 9 saves for UCSB but faced 26 shots on goal by Chapman. "We're disappointed and it was a bit frustrating out there at times," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey after the game, "but we can go to work on Monday fixing the draw control and ground ball issues we experienced." "We will also be instilling a more goal hungry attitude in our offense." UCSB hosts Whittier College in the final exhibition game of the season on Friday, January 31st, in a 2:00pm game at the UCSB Recreation Center Sports Complex.
