Pittsburgh Upsets UCSB 14-10Feb. 13, 2014
"Considering we were outshot 27-15 and only got 7 draw controls to have lost by four goals means we did a lot of other things quite well." commented UCSB Head Coach Paul Ramsey. "It just didn't seem like it during the game as they were getting all those possessions." Pittsburgh went on a 7 goal run early in the second half right after UCSB went up 7-6 on a goal by Blair Evans (Salinas, CA). Seven goals later the Panthers were up 13-7. The Gauchos mounted a rally and scored 3 unanswered goals to close the gap to 13-10 but Pittsburgh won the next draw and stalled out it for the last 8 minutes except for an unassisted goal with 59 seconds remaining as UCSB was out pressuring to try to break the stall. Pittsburgh had at a minimum ten more possessions than the Gauchos based on just the draw control ratio but UCSB shooting 66% kept them in it. The loss dropped UCSB to 2-1 while Pittsburgh improved to 1-0. Shootout action continues throughout the weekend. Next up for the Gauchos are the third ranked Georgia Bulldogs at 6:00pm on Friday. Pittsburgh faces 14th ranked Westminster at 12 Noon.
