UCSB Advances To WWLL SemifinalsApr. 19, 2014
Senior Megan Hughes (Tustin, CA) had a monster game to frustrate the San Diego State offense. Hughes had 7 first half saves followed by 10 second half saves for a total of 17 saves against 12 goals allowed. The 17 saves is the new WWLL Tournament record for saves in a single game. Three Gauchos scored three goals apiece. Sophomore Amanda Shoemaker (Poway, CA), freshman Claire Wilson (Healdsburg, CA) and senior Samm Wilson (San Jose, CA) each picked up the hat tricks. Senior midfielder Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) had 7 draw controls and 4 ground balls. The win reversed the regular season outcome between the two teams. San Diego State won 17-13 on March 14th in Santa Barbara. The Gauchos will look to reverse their regular season result with UCLA later this afternoon too. Semifinals come up quick in the WWLL Tournament with the start times for the quarters and the semis only four hours apart. UCLA, then ranked 6th nationally, won 16-12 on March 8th. UCLA dispatched the club from UC Davis 14-8 in their quarterfinal. Game time is 2:00pm in UCSB Harder Stadium. San Diego State moves to the left in the brackets and will play UC Davis at 2:00pm in a placement game where the winner goes to the fifth place game.
