Trepa Leads UCSB At UC BerkeleyApr. 6, 2015
The Gauchos led 7-3 a little over two minutes into the second half when UC Berkeley scored three goals in their only significant run of the contest. That pulled the Bears to within one goal at 7-6 with 25 minutes left to play. Then three UCSB players scored a goal apiece and the Gauchos went up 10-6. It became close again at 12-10 with just under 9 minutes to go and then three Gauchos scored a goal apiece to put it away as UCSB finished the game strong. Freshman goalie Cyrena Malkowski (Lake Forest, CA) had 14 saves for 58.3% to get the win. UCSB sophomore Julia Swensen (Piedmont, CA) turned in a career performance in front off her hometown crowd. The defender scooped up 6 ground balls and forced 5 UC Berkeley turnovers. Swensen also snared a draw control along the way. At the other end of the field two attackers notably also had ground balls, a stat recorded only on a change of possession, so they rode hard and defended well themselves. Sophomore Echo Meyers (Laguna Niguel, CA) had 5 ground balls and senior Molly Meek (Los Angeles, CA) had 3 ground balls. The Gauchos improved to 8-6 overall while UC Berkeley dropped to 3-8. The Bears are done for the season while UCSB hosts top ranked Santa Clara on Saturday, April 11th, in UCSB Harder Stadium. It is the first of a two game home stand in Harder Stadium for the Gauchos. UCSB also faces Arizona State there on Sunday, April 12th.
