
Gauchos Use 7-1 Second Half to Best Chico StateApr. 2, 2016
It was not an entirely satisfying feeling for UCSB at halftime but the Gauchos turned it on for the second half on their way to outshooting Chico 29-12. UCSB won the half 7-1 and scored five unanswered goals to finish the game. Freshman midfielder Rachael Shaw (San Ramon, CA) had 6 draw controls and scored a goal for UCSB. Freshman Hollie Pelland (San Diego, CA) led all scorers with 6 goals and senior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) had a goal and 4 assists. Both Sabbag and Pelland eclipsed 50 points on the season in the game today. Sabbag, who has played in two fewer games than her teammates due to illness at the beginning of the season, reached 50 points with her fourth assist. Pelland did it with her fourth goal of the game. Senior Cailan Howey (Charlotte, NC) led UCSB defenders with 5 caused turnovers and 6 ground balls. Reserves played a big role today for the Gauchos. Everyone played in the game while most starters were subbed out and in and then out and in again but finishing on the sideline in anticipation of the huge implication game coming up at Santa Clara on Sunday. UCSB got 3 goals, an assist, 3 draw controls, 5 ground balls and 4 caused turnovers from reserves. Junior Meghana Vijayraghavan (Pleasanton, CA) had 3 draw controls and 3 ground balls. Sophmore Omari Harmon (Salisbury, MD) had two goals. Four different players had a caused turnover each. The win improves ninth ranked UCSB to 8-3 overall as the Gauchos head into a showdown with 12th ranked Santa Clara, 6-3 overall, on Sunday. Chico dropped to 2-8 overall and next plays Arizona State on April 10th.
