Fast Start By UCLA Gets Them 10-7 WinApr. 16, 2016
The Gauchos had fallen behind in the morning quarterfinal with the club from UC Davis too and spent a lot of energy fighting back and winning in overtime. It set up some momentum for UCSB in the evening semifinal with the Bruins but perhaps didn't let them play with the early tempo needed to keep pace with a fresh UCLA squad that had enjoyed a morning BYE in the first round. The Gauchos took 22 shots against UCLA goalie Andie Wong (Katy, TX), who was saving under 45% on the season, but only put 14 of the shots on goal. Seven UCSB shots went high or wide as the Gauchos went 7 for 22 on shooting and Wong saved 50%. UCLA scored 10 goals on 17 shots on goal against UCSB. After UCSB finally started getting some possessions on the draw and generating shots on offense making a complete come-back depended on finishing opportunities. The Gauchos dropped to 11-5 overall and play Santa Clara on Sunday at 10:00am in the WWLL third place game. UCLA improved to 11-4 and will play second seed Cal Poly SLO in the WWLL Championship game on Sunday. Both the #1 and #2 seeds advanced to the final. Eleventh ranked Cal Poly bettered thirteenth ranked Santa Clara 8-6 in the other semifinal.
