UCSB Seeded Third at the WDIA National Championship TournamentApr. 20, 2010
The last official meeting between the two teams was a 13-5 UCSB win at the Western States Tournament on April 5, 2009. More recently the Gauchos scrimmaged the Ducks on October 17, 2009 prior to Oregon playing in the Santa Barbara Fall Brawl the next day. The result of that full length contest was UCSB outscoring Oregon 19-16. "We've had success against Oregon in the past so we consider this a good first round game," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey when he saw the seedings. "But they've also played us tough so we can not overlook them or look past them in any way." At the WDIA National Championship Tournament UCSB will play Oregon at 5:00pm on Wednesday, May 5th, in the first round game for both teams. The winner advances to a quarterfinal contest to play the winner of the 11th seeded Colorado State versus 6th seeded Virginia Tech matchup. Colorado State bettered Virginia Tech 14-6 on March 27th at the A-Town Throwdown in Atlanta, Georgia so the seeds here don't necessarily predict who will advance. The home conference of the Gauchos fared well on selection Monday. The WWLL put four teams in the Division One championship and two teams in the Division Two championship. In the WDIA Division One bracket, top ranked Santa Clara is the #1 seed, the 3rd ranked club from UC Davis is the #4 seed and 5th ranked Cal Poly SLO is the #5 seed. In the WDIA Division the club from UC Berkeley is seeded first and University of San Diego is seeded fourth. Six teams in the national championships is the most of any conference or league in the WDIA. The WDIA Rankings Committee takes multiple criteria into account to determinie the at-large bids and the seedings. They are strength of schedule, overall record, record versus ranked teams (top 5, top 10, top 15, top 20, top 25), won-loss versus common opponents, record versus WDIA teams (inside/outside of conference; national play), record last five (5) games (including post-season league tournament play), quality wins, quality losses, upsets (especially on the road and late in the season), difference in number of wins and losses against teams +/- (.500), independent committee member evaluations, head to head results, conference playoff performance, final conference standings, Lax Power TSI Ranking and total number of losses.
