Gauchos Top The Eh Team from CanadaOct. 30, 2010
UCSB plays the top Hawaii team, Eleu, at 10:00am Sunday in Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. Eleu, also 2-0 in the tournament, is stocked this year with a few ringers and players from various parts east. The ringers include Team USA player and 2009 World Cup Champion Kristen Kjellman (Northwestern '07) and Kelly Berger (James Madison '07 and USA Elite Team). Both are in town just for the tournament. Additional players are on exchange at University of Hawaii. Eleu coach Kate Scanlon reports they've always had some UH students join their club in the past but have never had so many east coast transplants. The game is a semifinal by virtue of the placement of the game as last of the pool play games for both teams and both teams being 2-0. The winner of the UCSB vs. Eleu contest advances to the championship game at 1:30pm on Sunday. Pool play is the format for the Hawaii Tournament this year, a departure from the use of seeded brackets in the past. UCSB is in Pool A with Eleu, Chushikoku U-20 and The Eh Team. Pool B has defending champion Team Breakaway from Seattle, Hokkaido Under-20 and West Coast Force. Only the top team in each pool advances to the championship game for this tournament. The standard A1 vs. B2 and A2 vs. B1 cross-over semifinals are absent from the schedule. Breakaway finished Saturday pool play 2-0 as well and seems on track to advance to the championship from Pool B.
