7th Ranked UCSB Dispatches Aztecs 23-11 On Senior DayApr. 10, 2011
San Diego State has at least a share of first place in WWLL South pending the outcome of the Arizona State at Arizona game on Monday night. In the game against the Aztecs the Gauchos played as if it were already a first round play-off game. UCSB led San Diego State 14-5 at halftime and let up only slightly in the second half before responding to the Aztecs closing to within 7 goals with about 9 minutes remaining. San Diego State outscored the Gauchos 6-3 over an 8 minute period. Then UCSB cranked it back up and scored 6 of the next 7 goals to finish the game. Overall UCSB outshot San Diego State 38-24. "I know it looks bad to keep going on offense at that point and score 23 goals but they're a first place team and not exactly helpless," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey when asked about the continued offense. Indeed, if UCSB had shut down and San Diego State had scored a few more the final would have been 17-12 or 17-13. That's a much different momentum going into the post-season than the actual 23-11 outcome. "We want to keep that going heading into the league championship tournament," says Ramsey. "Outscoring teams 6-1 in periods of play is how we want to get it done." Junior goal keeper Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 13 saves while allowing 11 goals for 54.2%. The ground ball leader was Nelsen with 5 followed by Antoon-Algieri and sophomore defender Emilia Norlin (Mill Valley, CA) with 4 ground balls apiece. UCSB improved to 11-6 overall while San Diego State dropped to 7-7. The Gauchos play next in a WWLL Quarterfinal game on April 16th. Seedings for the tournament and match-ups will be announced April 12th. The most likely pairing is a #3 seeded UCSB pitted against a #6 seeded UC Berkeley. The two programs haven't met in a women's lacrosse game for more than a decade.
