UCSB junior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) led all scorers with 5 goals and 1 assist. Mitchell also had 5 ground balls, 3 caused turnovers, 2 draw controls and no fouls or penalties. The midfielder was 5 for 5 on shooting with a mix of solo efforts, cuts for feeds on assisted plays and free position shots. Senior Jordan Venetis (Thousand Oaks, CA) was similarly efficient on her opportunities scoring 3 goals on 3 shots. Senior Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had a career best game. Centner and the defense allowed just 6 goals from 22 Berkeley shots on goal, giving Center 72.7% to start the season. The senior and her defense were also effective on clears getting 21 out of 26 transition opportunities into the offensive end. Emilia Norlin (Mill Valley, CA) had 4 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers to lead defenders. UC Berkeley had six different players score a goal apiece. Midfielder Sargis Madison (San Marcos, CA), who scored 3 goals against Santa Clara last week, notched only one goal in this game. UCSB improved to 1-0 and takes to the road next weekend for games at University of Arizona and Arizona State University. UC Berkeley dropped to 0-2 and next faces University of Wyoming at the Santa Barbara Shootout February 18th.
